Some Republicans in Utah are trying to censure Mitt Romney for his vote to convict President Donald Trump during the second impeachment trial.
The motion, which is reportedly circulating on social media, accuses Romney of failing to “represent the average conservative Utah Republican voter.” It also claims that Romney “misrepresented himself as a Republican” when he ran for office.
Criticisms listed in the draft censure include the allegation that Romney “embarrassed the State of Utah” when he was the only Republican senator during the first impeachment trial to vote in favor of convicting Trump.
Romney had also voted to remove Trump for supposedly abusing his power in pressuring the Ukraine to launch an investigation into the Biden Crime Family.
Romney also opposed a Republican-led effort to declare Trump’s second impeachment trial unconstitutional since the 45th president is no longer officially in office.
During the second impeachment trial, Romney and six other alleged Republicans voted in favor of convicting Trump. Since a two-thirds Senate majority is required to remove a president, Trump was ultimately acquitted.
According to the censure motion, Romney used his “senatorial power and influence to undermine” Trump. “Romney appears to be an agent for the Establishment Deep State,” the document further reads.
Meanwhile, top leaders in the Utah Republican Party have vocally distanced themselves from this backlash against Romney, standing behind the RINO (Republican in Name Only) presumably because they all share the same Mormon religion.
Sen. Mike Lee, who voted to acquit Trump, issued a statement in defense of Romney, claiming that the “differences” between Romney and other Utah Republicans “showcase a diversity of thought, in contrast to the danger of a party fixated on ‘unanimity of thought.'”
“There is power in our differences as a political party, and we look forward to each senator explaining their votes to the people of Utah,” Lee added in a canned response.
Evan McMullin, a former Republican who ran for president as an independent in 2016 and failed, also came to Romney’s defense, pretending to be dumbfounded that anyone would disagree with Romney’s relentless anti-American behavior.
“Mitt has done more to defend the Constitution than any congressional Republican in modern history,” McMullin said with a straight face. “He is serving the country and doing more to defend liberty than anyone else. We need to stand with him.”
This chorus of back-patting from one Mormon to another is typical of this religious sect, which contrary to Lee’s claim is almost always fixated on unanimity of thought, especially when it comes to maintaining power and control over others.
According to McMullin, who has repeatedly been critical of Trump, Romney demonstrated courage in voting to impeach Trump after Trump had already left office, and Mormons and Republicans everywhere should stand behind Romney.
“There is a tremendous need and opportunity for Utah to lead on this,” McMullin added. “There are plenty of good Republicans in Utah who are committed to the founding principles of our country, the very same kind of leadership Mitt is offering right now.”
In 2020, Romney became the first U.S. senator in history to vote to remove a president of his own party from office during Trump’s first impeachment trial. And while the Utah Republican Party Central Committee is now trying to punish Romney, his Mormon buddies are all coming to his aid to shield him.
“There wasn’t enough support to censure Sen. Romney a year ago,” says Utah GOP Chairman Derek Brown. “The impact of these kinds of resolutions has been minimal.”
