Investigative journalist Jefferey Jaxen and Informed Consent Action Network (ICAN) founder and CEO Del Bigtree discussed on “The HighWire” how the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has lost its way.
On May 17, the FDA expanded the emergency use authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer BNT162b2 vaccine against the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) – this time as a booster for children between five and 11 years of age. It followed the Jan. 3, 2022 approval of the Pfizer booster dose for teenagers aged 12 to 15.
“The FDA did not hold a meeting of its Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) as the agency previously convened [it] for extensive discussions regarding the use of booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines. After [a] review of Pfizer’s EUA request, the FDA concluded that the request did not raise questions that would benefit from additional discussion by [VRBPAC] members,” an FDA press release stated.
Jaxen commented: “What’s interesting about this press release is [that the FDA] slapped every one of those [committee] members in the face. I hope you members [realize] – if you’re watching this or if you read the press release – you have just been disrespected by the agency that you’re supposedly advising.”
“‘All of your [titles] in front of your name – doctor, immunologist – that means nothing. You can add nothing to this discussion,’ they said to you.”
The ICAN founder and CEO also put in his two cents. “They rushed this vaccine out without a long-term safety trial, [with] no idea of the long-term safety effects. Can you imagine if we keep doing this with every product that the pharmaceutical industry makes? If the vaccine or the drug [is not the one] that kills us, this approach toward medicine will be,” Bigtree said.
“They just cut off [the other VRBPAC members] completely. Now, it’s just like ‘We’re just [going to] make decisions without any scientific debate, and if there’s debate, we’re [going to] skip it. Such a dangerous precedent [with] what we’re watching here.” (Related: JAB ‘EM YOUNG: FDA approves Pfizer’s booster vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 without consulting vaccine advisory panel.)
Jaxen then played a recording of infectious disease expert and VRBPAC member Dr. Michael Kurilla back in October 2021. The committee had been deliberating about the primary two-dose regimen for children during that time, which he opposed. In fact, Kurilla was the only committee member who abstained whereas the rest of the VRBPAC voted to authorize the two-shot COVID-19 vaccine.
Kurilla asked: “While the benefit here is assumed to be prevention of severe disease, my one concern is particularly for children [that have] undergone previous COVID-19 infection. The questions, really, become: Does this vaccine offer any benefits to them at all? Are they actually very well protected?”
He also questioned the idea of injecting children with a vaccine against an earlier strain to protect them against a new variant: “Does that actually help or hurt their current immune system with regard to ongoing variants?”
Kurilla ended with a warning: “These children are going to be expected to have a booster in another six months. We’re going to see vaccine breakthroughs in this population and it’s going to cause all the same problems that COVID-19 does, whether or not they’re vaccinated.”
Bigtree echoed the FDA advisor’s warning about the COVID-19 vaccines for children.
“The days of this idea that your kid’s [going to] get a [COVID-19] vaccine and then they’ll be protected for life are over. This protection is lasting months – meaning somewhere down the road, you are increasing the risk of your child being infected,” he said.
“Forget about this argument: That you’re vaccinated in order to protect those that can’t vaccinate to create this cocoon. It is dead, it is gone. Your infected child is going to be more infected because you gave them the vaccine.”
