Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders is facing immediate and intense backlash online after announcing that she signed a “Memorandum of Understanding” (MoU) to strengthen the diplomatic, economic and spiritual ties between the state of Arkansas and the nation of Israel.

The post quickly gained traction from netizens, given that Israel’s government is facing increasing international scrutiny over alleged war crimes in Gaza and the West Bank. At the same time, thousands of users took to her comment section to express outrage, calling the deal tone-deaf and questioning the timing given Arkansas’ own domestic challenges.

One widely shared post by X user Let’s Theorize called the agreement “dystopian,” adding, “a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ between a State of the Union and a genocidal foreign government, based on a historically illiterate boomer interpretation of the Bible, has got to be some of the most dystopian [stuff] I’ve ever seen.”

Another user, CHICK ON THE RIGHT, wrote: “You’re a disgrace. Seventh poorest state in the union and you’ve given these impoverished people’s dollars to genocidal murderers. Zionist supports murderers, pedos, blackmail rings and porn kings. Real Jesus like. Did your evangelical daddy and his DUGGAR cult TEACH YOU THIS? Zero respect.”

The criticism also carried a heavy religious and conspiratorial tone in some corners, with several users referencing longstanding grievances related to U.S.-Israel relations, alleged foreign policy manipulations and American political figures’ evangelical support for Israel. While some of the replies contained overtly antisemitic language and conspiracy theories, others reflected broader dissatisfaction with the perceived imbalance of priorities in state leadership.

Sanders needs to focus on Arkansas

According to the 2024 U.S. News and World Report, Arkansas ranks 15th in fiscal stability, largely due to its low cost of living and relatively balanced budget; 26th in the economy, showing moderate strength; and 28th in opportunity, which includes factors such as income equality and upward mobility.

The state’s Natural Environment came in at 35th, suggesting room for improvement in environmental quality and conservation efforts.

However, Arkansas ranked 47th out of 50 states overall, reflecting significant challenges in several key areas. The state ranked 48th in crimes and corrections, highlighting issues with public safety and the criminal justice system. In health care, Arkansas placed 47th, indicating limited access and quality of medical services. Education was also a weak point, with the state ranking 36th, while infrastructure came in at 41st, pointing to deficiencies in transportation, utilities and public facilities.

These rankings reveal a complex portrait of Arkansas, a state with economic and fiscal potential, but one still grappling with foundational issues in public health, safety, education and infrastructure. Many critics highlighted these figures in contrast to Sanders’ overseas commitments, arguing that her focus should remain on improving conditions for Arkansans.
